From the Akashic Record
GA 11
This important volume reconstructs from the Akasha Record events between the origin of the earth and the beginning of recorded history. Steiner gives an overview of the Atlantean and Lemurian civilizations, their origins, achievements, and fate. These remarkable "lost" root races developed the first concepts of good and evil, manipulated forces of nature, laid the groundwork of all legal and ethical systems, and defined and nurtured the distinctive yet complementary powers of men and women that brought humankind to its highest artistic, intellectual, and spiritual attainments.
Rudolf Steiner first published the writings as a series of twenty articles between July 1904 and May 1908 in the magazine Lucifer-Gnosis. The publication appeared monthly until the 16th installment, then at yearly intervals, with Steiner linking the individual contributions with introductions, summaries, or transitions. In a slightly revised form, the essays also appeared in the special edition booklets of Lucifer-Gnosis, and in two editions of special collection of Lucifer-Gnosis (1908-10). The latter is the first version published as a standalone work, with continuous pagination and numbered chapters. In 1908, he also published a separate edition of the first part of the work under the title Unsere Atlantischen Vorfahren (Our Atlantic Ancestors), consisting of the preliminary remarks and the first two chapters, Unsere atlantischen Vorfahren (Our Atlantic Ancestors) and Übergang der vierten in die fünfte Wurzelrasse (Transition from the Fourth to the Fifth Root Race), which underwent three new editions by 1925.
